‘Love is in the Bin’

The Banksy work that was shredded last Friday will be on public display in London this weekend.

Girl With Balloon spontaneously shredded itself via a shredder built into its frame immediately after being sold at auction for £1,042,000.

Banksy himself admitted responsibility for the shredding via a video posted to Instagram, although how the shredder was activated has not been made clear, leading some to suggest that someone at Sotheby’s was in on the prank.

Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s Head of Contemporary Art, Europe, said:

‘Banksy didn’t destroy an artwork in the auction, he created one. Following his surprise intervention on the night, we are pleased to confirm the sale of the artist’s newly-titled Love is in the Bin, the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction.’

It was revealed on Thursday that the buyer will go ahead with the sale at that price. Banksy’s authentication body, Pest Control, has given the work a certificate of authenticity, and has renamed it to Love is in the Bin, 2018.

Love is in the Bin will be on display at Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries, 13 and 14 October, noon-5pm (last entry 4.30pm).
